Description
Self Portrait with Clips
This is a self portrait that started out as a color pencil drawing. It didn't photograph well so I started drawing over it with digital paint, in the end the drawing became an abstraction of the original and this is one of many in the series. When I look now at what it became, I can see how much one of my favourite paintings has influenced me and stayed with me. Two Tahitian Women by Paul Gauguin. I like Gauguin. He is not my favourite painter but I think that is my favourite painting. I was fortunate enough to see it in person several years after I had seen it in a wonderful book my mother bought me, a book that is now covered in fingerprints and paint. It moved me just as much as the Van Gogh that was in the same room. I love Gauguin's color, I love his paint, I loved his chunky lines, but most of all I love the expression of one of the women in the painting, and I was really surprised when I uploaded this how much it reminds me of that expression, and all without intent. It's funny the things we recognize how somewhere, sometime, they are already a part of ourselves. There are particular and universal truths to the best paintings, and a really great painting becomes a part of us, or perhaps, already is.
