Oil Painting on Canvas
Still Life, Interior
This was my mother's kitchen. I painted this painting shortly after she died. It is a still life painting of an artificial flower arrangement surrounded by candlesticks, decorative eggs, and a folding diptych I had grown up, with laid out on the kitchen table on a cotton tablecloth. In the background are a grandfather style pendulum clock hanging on the wall, and an indoor houseplant in a yellow planter, and other odds and ends, lying on the side table. To the left is the sliding glass door leading out to the outside side patio. This is also an interior painting, as the room was full of objects which held memories for me and were still illumined with my mother's presence. These are the things I grew up with. I painted it at night. The house was quiet then as all of my siblings had gone on to lead their own lives. I lived with my father for a time after my mom died. The house was very quiet at night.
I like this in the studio dark espresso brown wood frame with a dark red-brown or maroon mat, as it highlights the stillness and traditional aspects of the painting.
